Ok after watching a few videos it seems the bulk of the damage is done by the TNT blocks that are flung from the main group, so further research into the best placement of the initial charge is required.
It looks like the TNT sphere in the above video is 64 blocks high. That's the distance from ground level to the top of the world. Now we just calculate the volume of a sphere....(can some one check my maths)
Volume = 12.566 * R * R * R / 3
137,254 = 12.566 * 32 * 32 *32 /3 [Image Can Not Be Found] hock:
1 block of TNT is made from 5 blocks of gunpowder and 4 blocks of sand
137,254 x 5 = 686,270 gunpowder (or only 10,722 stacks of 64)
137,254 x 4 = 549,016 sand (or only 8,578 stacks of 64)
All hands on deck!!! We're gonna need more mob cushers!!! [Image Can Not Be Found]

hmmm i like the smell of gunpowder in the morning
but according to the minecraft structure planner, to build a sphere with a 32 block radius (64d) we will need 171,124 blocks of tnt to make it solid.
Gunpowder = 5 * 171,124 = 855620 / 64 = 13,370 stacks
Sand = 4 * 171,124 = 684496 / 64 = 10,696 stacks
Below are the finished view and the starting 3 layers. all blocks shown in the b/w picture step up by 1 for each ring as you step out. Remember that you're filling it in as you go too. Inner clear ring is on the ground, next ring is one block off the ground, etc...

Who said:
If you drop the radius to 16 it makes it much more achievable
yes but the bang won't be big enough [Image Can Not Be Found]
